The Meaning of Life?

Last week I was regaling my wife with a news story I’d came across that day. It was about the discovery, in Argentina, of a gigantic prehistoric communal crapper… And indeed the oldest such site ever unearthed.

The site dated back to around 240 million years ago and consisted of thousands of fossilised dinosaur poos.

Truly mind boggling stuff…

As my re-telling of the story continued however, Katie stopped me in my tracks.

She said, “I don’t want to hear about this. That dinosaur crap freaks me out.”

At this point I tried to explain that the crap in question was fossilised and as such not really that unpleasant or smelly at all…

“No” she said. “Not the ‘crap’ just this whole Dinosaur thing”…

What was bothering her was the very fact that Dinosaurs once roamed the earth and that this was 240 million years ago.

When you stop and think about this, it is pretty tough to comprehend.

It makes you realise that our lives are mere specks on the vast tapestry of time… And in another 240 million years what will any of it matter?

We are thus confronted with the potential meaninglessness of life…..

…and you thought you were just having a look at a boat for sale!

Anyway, whether you’re religious or not, we all must grapple with the question of life’s meaning in our own way.

But I’ll tell you one thing for certain.

Our time on this Earth is short.

This is not a dress rehearsal.

Who knows what’s next, but I reckon we should make the absolute most of the here and now.

So, if you’ve been promising yourself and your family a boat for years… just buy one.

Sure the boat will cost you a few quid, but what’ll that matter in 240 million years time?!

In the meantime think of the fun you’ll have and the memories you’ll make, that will be with you for the rest of your days.
